Dickens & Rumi

Independent family reading and viewing resource

About Dickens & Rumi

Our purpose: help families understand what is in a book or film before choosing it—without pretending that one score can make the decision for every reader.

Dickens & Rumi is an independent, family-focused catalogue of books and films. It brings content cautions, positive qualities, age guidance, reading order, source notes and borrowing or purchase options into one place.

Describe, don’t judge

Ratings describe the presence or prominence of content. A topic, identity, belief or character is not automatically classified as good or bad.

Show both sides

Every assessment considers cautions such as violence and frightening scenes alongside strengths such as kindness, courage and educational value.

Unknown is not zero

When available evidence cannot support a score, the category remains unresolved rather than being presented as absent.

Corrections stay open

Readers can report a mistaken identity, score or evidence note. Published pages link directly to the correction process.

How a guide is made

  1. Identify the exact work. Title, creator, year, edition and medium are checked to reduce mix-ups between similarly named works.
  2. Gather permitted evidence. Sources may include public-domain full text, publisher material, educator guides, plot summaries, official classifications, open metadata and reader reports.
  3. Assess the complete rubric. The process covers content cautions and positive qualities rather than focusing only on potentially concerning material.
  4. Check agreement and confidence. Automated assessments use independent models and validation rules. Missing categories, identity uncertainty or weak agreement can hold a title from publication.
  5. Publish with limitations visible. Each page states whether the full work or supporting sources were checked and keeps its evidence notes available for review.

What belongs in the catalogue

The public catalogue is for narrative or informational books and films that a family might choose to read or watch. Coloring products, write-in journals, worksheets, commercial study guides, academic criticism, dissertations and unrelated catalogue records are excluded. Companion books that are themselves genuine reading selections may be included.

AI and human judgment

Artificial intelligence helps process a large catalogue, compare structured assessments and identify gaps. It does not make a title error-proof. Models can confuse works, overlook brief content or overstate what a summary proves. Publication checks reduce those risks, and families should still read the detailed notes and use their own judgment.

Age guidance

Age labels are content-based starting points, not guarantees of suitability or reading level. A child’s reading ability, sensitivities, maturity and family context can make the right choice different from the displayed age.

Independence and funding

Ratings are not sold to publishers, studios or retailers. Some outbound retailer links are affiliate links; Dickens & Rumi may earn a commission from a qualifying purchase at no extra cost to the visitor. Affiliate relationships do not determine scores, inclusion or publication.

Sources we do not collect

Dickens & Rumi does not scrape or reproduce restricted or licensed review services. Public pages rely on permitted sources, retained evidence and the catalogue’s own assessments.
